Funchal, the capital of Madeira, is the eighth largest city of Portugal with its 110.000 inhabitants. It was founded in 1421 by João Gonçalves Zarco, one of the explorers of Madeira, and has been a bishop´s seat since the 16th century. The name was given to the city by the fennel ("Funcho" = fennel), which was found there when the island was discovered.
