Funchal

Funchal, the capital of Madeira and the centre of turism. Still today,you find 80 % of the Hotels in Funchal : with the old and very well known Reid´s Hotel and the Hotel Savoy you can see the oldest ones. More modern Hotels were built in the western part of Funchal along the Estrada Monumental.
You should visit the park and the municipal garden , they both are an oasis within the city of Funchal. An absolute must is visiting the market place and go to to a wine tasting in the old Adegas de Sao Francisco, a former Monastery where the monks started already with the production of the madeira wine. The Capital of Madeira! Everybody visiting Madeira has to see Funchal: the market place, the cathedral built in the 16th century, all the beautiful gardens :
The Botanical Garden above Funchal ( opened every day except Christmas day), the Municipal garden in the centre of Funchal ...they all worth a visit!
Visit the market place ( Mercado dos Lavradores ) on a market day ( best on Tuesdays, Fridays or Saturday morning)with its fruits, fresh fish, flowers, vegetables and herbs....pass through the romantic old part of town and have a nice meal....go with the cable car to Monte....
Lots of restaurants and cafés invite you just observing the bustle on the streets around the cathedral.
Nearly all museums of Madeira are situated in the capital of the island ( all closed on Monday). Come and see them !
