Porto Moniz has one of the biggest attraction of the island : the nature swimmingpools, built in the lava rocks and filled up with seawater. You swim in a pool but in the atlantic ocean. Observing the black lava rocks and the cliffs, you can imagine the eruption millions of years ago.......
Porto Moniz has some nice restaurants and bars - in the summer time its not too hot because of the winds from the atlantic ocean. There is a small museum ( aquarium ) you could visit and in a few minutes drive you can reach the Levada Ribeira da Janela ( Lamaceiros) with splendid views.
Place information Porto Moniz
Porto Moniz in the northwestern part of the island for sure is one of the most famous parts of the island: the nature swimmingpool ( today there is only one open, in former times it were two)built into the lava rocks is one of the biggest attraction, Madeira has: enjoy swimming in the pool but be in the atlantic ocean...
Another big attraction is the rough and wildromantic road which connects Sao Vicente with Porto Moniz. If you drive to Porto Moniz it should be from S.Vicente to Porto Moniz and not the opposite way in order to drive parts of the old ER 102 ( estrada regional)and not following the new tunnels. The opposite way can only be done via tunnels as it is a one-way street. The small villages of Seixal, Achadas da Cruz and Ribeira da Janela belong to the council of Porto Moniz.
