Santana

Santana is one of the best known regions of Madeira. It is the ideal place to start your walks in the north: you may choose Levadas or you choose the coastpath leading to Sao Jorge, or you just go up to Queimadas ( nature park) or even higher upto 1600 m Achada do Teixeira, where you can walk within 1 hour to Madeiras highest peak, the Pico Ruivo. The themepark "parque temático" for sure is the biggest attraction : its a sort of an outdoor museum and you will get to know all about the vulcanic origin of the island, the history, culture, tradition and handycraft. The origin of the famous madeiran embroidery is in Santana. The old houses of Santana look like puppet houses, small, colourful and with thatched roofs.
