São Vicente

Sao Vicente is an idyllic place to go : the village is close to the northcoast, small cafés and a lovely historic centre.In the middle of the village , surrounded by a small park, the cemitery and some bars and restaurants, you find the church from the 17th century.Sao Vicente offers a different attraction to other villages of Madeira: the caves of Sao Vicente, for sure one of the most interesting outdoor museum of Madeira.In the middle of the riverbed you find the chapel of Vincentius of Valencia, built in 1692 : a legend writes, that the Saint was thrown into the atlantic but appeared in Sao Vicente..... the chapel was built and named after him.

From Ribeira Brava you can take the Encumeada - Pass or go through the tunnel recently built to leave the southcoast and go to the northcoast.One of the most interesting atractions are the caves of Sao Vicente, once in there you will get to know all about the origin of Madeira as a vulcanic island.In former times and still today you find lots of wineyards, old Manor Houses reminds on former times, when the Madeira Wine Export was one of the most famous exports of the island.The village itself is small and charming. Another atraction is the nice and romantic road along the coast leading to Porto Moniz or to Ponta Delgada.
